Licensing in Linux …. sigh. For those who don’t understand how much of a headache this is, have a look at this, essentially triggered by the latest version of the Gnu Public License, version 3 to be precise. Without going into the technicals, newer versions of the license are incompatible, essentially, with older versions and since the latest one was first mooted there has been much fire and brimstone over the contents. There is plenty out there which I wont add to, I just can’t help wondering if some folk forgot that developers are not lawyers and need simplicity rather than a dazzling array of ways to make their code freely available for use and improvement. Which is what open source is all about.
